We’ve all wondered what it would be like to pit a supercar against a superjet. Well, as they often do, the guys at Top Gear have answered our prayers. The team put McLaren’s fastest ever car, the Speedtail to the ultimate test, racing it against the Royal Air Force’s F-35 Lightning II fighter jet.
Pitted as a battle of speed, the McClaren Speedtail v Fighter Jet race was more like a battle of the high priced, high-performance machines. The F-35 is the latest in Lockheed Martin’s arsenal of maneuverable fighter jets, capable of 1200 mph flat-out, with a price tag of $124 million. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Speedtail boasts over 1000 horsepower from a hybrid drive system, a centre-seating position, and some crazy active aero components. Oh, it’s also worth $2.2 million, but that seems like a bargain compared to the jet.
Top Gear host Chris Harris organised the race, jumping in the twin-turbo V-8 Speedtail for the event. With a top speed of 252 mph, the McLaren Speedtail is just about as quick as they come, so we were expecting a decent race, what we got was something better.
