For 30 years, a secret car collector has quietly gone about adding very rare cars to his over 300-strong collection. The cars included models from Ferrari, Corvette, Camaro, Lamborghini and more, however, through time constraints and aged, most were never washed or detailed. When the time came for the collector to sell up, interested parties hit the lot and they were astounded by what they found; a Bizzarrini P538 worth $1,000,000.
In the video, pro detailers from AMMO NYC chronicled their visit to the collection, and the work they did on the Bizzarrini. The rare car is just one of six models ever made was buried under caked on layers of dust. Aside from the rarity of the car, the Bizzarini is valuable for its impressive history. Named for Giotto Bizarini, who designed the car, the P538 featured a four-carb, 327 cubic-inch V8 taken from a Chevrolet Corvette. The engine sat behind the driver and fed 355 horsepower to a five-speed manual transaxle that was built for racing. The nomenclature of the car denotes all of these stats—the “P” is for posterior, meaning rear-engine layout; the “53” refers to the 5.3-litre engine, and the “8” stands for V8.
It was no easy feat getting this car cleaned. The AMMO team had no water to use, so they had to resort to their foam spray to clear off all the dust. As the layers of dust were stripped away, the beauty of the car was revealed. It was in surprisingly good shape. The interior also cleaned up nicely, thanks to the use of a vacuum and a foaming seat cleaner. Once the heavy grime was cleaned off, the team came back in with an intense lather and a steam cleaner. The leather seats were in dire need of a leather conditioner, which was applied to bring the seats back to their former glory.
The Bizzarrini is the ultimate garage find. The only thing that could possibly top such a find would be to discover another Bizzarini stashed away in the collection—and that’s exactly what the AMMO team did. The collector had not only car number 003, but Bizarrini P538 number 004 as well.
