This is why we love McLaren. Known around the world for its limited-edition, sometimes absurd, hypercars. They’ve built a reputation as the go-to manufacturer for some of the wildest machines on the planet i.e. Speedtial, Senna, and Elva. And they’ve just unveiled another landmark model to complement the 765LT ‘Longtail’ coupe that was revealed last year. Introducing the 765LT Spider.
Update 04/06/2022: McLaren has just announced the pricing and local availability of the 765LT Spider with a starting price of $684,900 AUD before on-road costs. That places it at a $75,250 AUD premium over the sold-out 765LT Coupe and we expect the Spider to sell out equally as quickly with only 765 Spiders being produced in total. We also expect that price to keep into seven figures by the time it’s all said and done with a myriad of McLaren MSO options and features to choose from.
The new Spider is McLaren’s most powerful-ever convertible supercar and brings the highest-ever levels of driver engagement to the McLaren LT experience. One that embodies the key dynamics of the McLarens most track-focused and dynamic package, including; minimised weight, track-focused dynamics, optimised aerodynamics, and – most importantly – exclusivity.

The driver of the LT Spider is the centre of the experience with a ferocious, 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 765PS – with a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio – and 800Nm of torque. Furthermore, the transmission’s gear ratios have been revised for even greater engagement all the way through the rev range, as you catapult yourself forward to a top speed of 330kph in just over 20-seconds.
“Lowering the convertible roof opens up another level of driver engagement. The coupe is impressive, but when you lower the roof of the Spider, there is a step-change in character – almost a theatrical element,” said Global Product Manager, Ian Howshall.
Weight and rigidity concerns are a thing of the past with modern convertibles. For example, the 720S Spider from which the 765LT Spider is developed weighs just 1,468kg and boasts a better power-to-weight ratio than any of its competitors. But that hasn’t stopped the Longtail ethos from shining through in a demand for the brand’s relentless pursuit of lowering weight. At 1,388kg (almost 100KG less than a Porsche GT3) the new Spider shaves 80kg off the DIN weight of the 720S Spider.
To achieve such, almost everything has been changed to carbon fibre, including the front splitter, new front bumper, lower door blades and side skirts, wraparound rear bumper and active rear wing. And for the ballers, the bonnet, front fenders, outer door panels and rear fenders are also available in body-colour carbon fibre as MSO Defined options. The front fenders reduce weight by a total of 1.2kg, and the rear fenders and door panels together by 4.9kg.
Probably our favourite edition to McLaren ‘Longtail’ models would be the exhaust. In this case, a titanium exhaust system dominates the soundstage and poses a beautiful visual addition to the rear of the car. The four centrally mounted round exit pipes are designed, sized, angled and positioned, to increase exhaust volume and the relative position of each pipe to the others delivers the precise harmonic content you expect from an LT.
