A feast for the eyes, the heart and the soul, and an architecture nerd’s wet dream, Mannal House in Tiree, Scotland is the pinnacle of modern design. Expertly built to complement its beautiful natural surroundings, a mere glance at photographs of the architectural masterpiece is enough to make you want to jump on a plane to the rolling hills of Scotland and cosy up by the window with a glass of Scotch.
The house itself is a recent build and has attracted significant attention from the design world. It is a 4-bedroom family home on the Isle of Tiree on the west coast of Scotland that sits high above the sea looking east towards the mainland over Mull. The site is on the working yard of the main house of the township of Mannal where the previous owner sold the dwelling and our site as two separate lots, which means the site is home to various farm buildings, ruins and a byre in which Mannal House sits.
The structural design of the house was inspired by the agricultural relics, informing the organisation of the house. As a result, the house is split into two wings and is perfectly nestled into the rebuilt stone walls, which are perhaps the most striking form of architectural expression the home boasts and a fitting ode to its history.
By far the best asset of the house is its location, but it is the way the design frames and accentuates the natural surroundings and stunning views that truly sets it apart. Upon entering, you are immediately met with a framed view of Hynish and a row of lighthouse cottages designed by Alan Stevenson. The windows that feature through the house are expansive, making one feel they are as close to the cold sea that lies beyond as can be – as if you were on a boat floating on the water. Not only does this bring in plenty of natural light, but by framing the main living area with the natural backdrop, you are constantly immersed in nature.
From a more structural standpoint, the ceilings of the house are subtly curved creating a contrast between the low-pitched roof outside. The inside features a bespoke timber, with the exterior of the house built from the materials and forms of Tiree, including stone walls, pebbledash render, timber cladding and bitumen in sheet and corrugated forms.
If you were thinking of putting in an offer, we’re sorry to say that unsurprisingly, this pioneering home has already been scooped up.
