Pedro & Tailor’s Luxury Basics Celebrate Culture

While COVID-19 had businesses closing their doors, long-time friends Josh Perez and Levi Tijerina decided it was the perfect time to launch a business. While their wives were fighting on the front lines of the pandemic—both wives are nurses—Josh and Levi started working on Pedro & Tailor, a company with the mission to “Celebrate a Life of Wonder.”

Josh and Levi both had successful careers in photography before they became stay-at-home dads. Their time as photographers showed them one thing, however. There just weren’t any brands out there that focused on celebrating diverse cultures. That lack of diversity prompted them to create Pedro & Tailor. “We are a business built on the idea of celebration,” explains Josh. “Celebrating your own unique cultures, histories, and stories.”

Still, it was a risk to launch in the midst of restrictions. Their product manufacturing process was paused, but the duo kept pressing forward. Josh and Levi offered a photography grant of USD$2,000 in prizes to photographers for submitting photos that represented “A Life of Wonder.”

The approach worked, and Pedro & Tailor took off. “We started our business giving money away before we could make any,” says Josh. “We wanted to build our brand showing we care more about what we have to give. This kick-started an amazing tribe and early adopters of people who wanted to support us. Then the sales naturally started to take off.”

The brand continues to do well because people can relate to it. “While most of our stuff is tied into our Hispanic roots, we wanted to create a space for people to have a chance to express their own stories and heritage. We built our business around celebrating people,” says Levi. The company aims to launch more products this summer, and they hope that they will be able to work with artisans around the world to bring those products to the people. “We both have a strong desire to try and source products from not just the places we come from, but having intentional relationships with our manufacturers and our makers.” Built as a brand that celebrates a life of wonder, Pedro & Tailor does so much more—it connects to everyone, everywhere.
