Nintendo is Attempting a New Super Mario Bros. Movie

We don’t know what’s going on over at Nintendo, but “production is moving ahead smoothly” on a brand new Super Mario Bros. film nearly three decades after the Japanese video game company failed hilariously to adapt the franchise into a live-action film. Now with some extra funds from an American film studio, the minds behind arguably the greatest video game series of all time are heading into the cinema.

Super Mario Movies

It didn’t work the first time for a whole heap of reasons, and yet, the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper still holds onto its cult-like status with those who love to watch a bombastic car crash take place over an hour and 44-minute run time. Following the mix of CGI and live-action in Pokémon Detective Pikachu, hopefully, Nintendo has learned a lesson from the last thirty years of terrible video game movies by going with an animated film adaptation instead.

With very little details currently in the grapevine, it’s hard to predict what will be delivered come 2022. Legendary creator and mind behind Mario and The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto is keeping his Koopa Shells close to his vest. Reportedly working with Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment to produce the film, the company behind 2005’s adaption of the classic video game Doom with Dwayne the Rock Johnson and Minions, is now taking the reigns of Nintendo’s mascot.

Swiftly coming after the success of Paramount Pictures blockbuster adaption of Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog, it seems the console wars of the 80s/90s is taking to the big screen for the next stage of the battle. With rumours suggesting Brie Larson for the role of Princess Peach, who would you cast to voice the rest of the lineup of characters? I think Jordan Shanks from Friendlyjordies might have a candidate to suggest, bruz.
