Margot Robbie Set to Star in Female-Led Pirates of the Caribbean Film

We’ve known for some time now that Pirates of the Caribbean is getting the reboot treatment, but exactly what the new format would look like was anyone’s guess. Now it appears, we have some clarity and a lot to look forward to. Aussie starlet and Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie is set to star in the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, which will reportedly be a female-led version of the hit Disney classic.

According to the latest information, Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean film will be a completely new adventure, rather than a spin-off or continuation of the blockbuster five-film franchise. Essentially, that means Johnny Depp’s iconic Captain Jack Sparrow is likely out, but there could be room for a reimagined, dishevelled former captain.

Penning the script will be Christina Hodson, who previously worked with Robbie on Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) which was released earlier this year to mixed reviews. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair are having a major influence on tinsel-town, promoting more female-led franchises and blockbuster films. Back in 2019, Robbie and Hodson launched the Lucky Exports Pitch Program, an initiative aimed at getting more female-identifying writers hired by studios to write action-centric movies.

While Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean film does look to be big news, the confusing point to note is that it isn’t the only swashbuckling adventure slated for the big screen. Another Pirates of the Caribbean film is reportedly in the works, with Ted Elliot, the co-writer behind four of the first five Pirates film at the helm. This version appears to be a full reboot of the original franchise, but nothing has been confirmed with relation to cast or storyline.

With Robbie and Hodson on-board for a female-fronted venture and Elliot penning his own Pirates plot, it’s got us asking, ‘Is there really room for two more Pirate-themed fantasy films on the market?’. Irrespective, it’s been a while since we saw a good old-fashioned action/adventure on the big screen. Surely, one of the new Pirates films will fire.
